Autumn 2004 I sent getas to MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA
1/1/2006 I went to New Year's movie. I payed attention to their feet and found the child actress wore two teeth geta which I made.

A child Sayuri run through Red Senbon-torii at Fushimi-inari-jinjya in kyoto. At this time she decided to become a geisha for meeting a company president again. I think this running scene is the best part.

Recently tengu geta have become more popular for previously unknown effects. They are now used for training in martial arts, for rehabilitation training, for training in mountain climbing, and are used often for teaching in school.

TENGU This is a goblin from Japanese legend. It has a red face and a long nose. With his supernatural power he can fly freely high up in the sky. He lives high in mountain recesses. His hand has a feather fan that can make a strong gale wind, and his feet have “Ipponba-geta (one-tooth-geta).

Recently the geta has made a come-back because of its popularity among young Japanese as well as tourists and foreigners. I see many tourists pass my shop and stop to look at the geta. I'm sure for many Japanese that pass by, the images of my shop bring back many fond memories.....

“Enman-geta” which is a Japanese word meaning “Happy Home-Geta” This geta’s shape is like an old-style Japanese rice cooker’s lid. So, another name commonly used is “Nabebuta-geta” .
Usually, geta’s shape is rectangle-like, with 4 sides. But this geta has a rounded shape. This shape is symbolic of peacefulness or friendliness and can be a metaphor for completeness or having had the rough edges rounded off. That is why it’s called, “Enman-geta.” A more special meaning is for a husband and wife to have a happy married life. In Japan, this is highly thought of as a traditional present given by guests at a wedding reception. Also, it has a unique shape not suited for daily footwear. These are used as decoration in a Japanese-style hotel called Ryokan, or a traditional, Japanese-style restaurant in the garden. In this case this geta style is called, “Newa-geta” meaning “garden-geta”. In either case these are used for decoration. However, recently this geta shape has become very popular for attention-seeking Japanese young people and has become fashionable for them to wear. This geta style isn’t made in Japan very much so if someone has this style it will attract a great deal of attention.

Attention to their footwear. The left is recent style of university graduation ceremony. The upper part is kimono (Japanese clothes). The lower part is hakama (Japanese skirt for formal wear). Footwear is boots!!! They are called "HAIKARA". At first sight it looks like curious, but It is very populer with the students. This style had been populer In the Meiji era and the Taishou era before.
The right is usual style. footwear is zori.
What do you think of the diffrence of these?
