1. The origin of Chirimen-mushi

One day, all of a sudden, I made a wonderful works one after another, though I cannot understand what it is. I was surprised after made them. why could I make so wonderful works?. Soon I tried to explain how the works were made by every possible means. But I could not define it with many regrets. Anyway I named the wounderful works "Chirimen-mushi" (Crape Insect)
ある日、突然として、よくわからないものが次から次へと生まれてくる、作ってみたあとで驚いた。どうしてこんなものができるのだろうか。一応、定義ずけてみたが自信がない。とりあえず、「ちりめん虫」と名前をつけた。ちりめん虫1（ちりめん虫の誕生）より

2. My shop's speciality chirimen-mushi "flatfish hirame or karei"
I made a new fancywork chirimen-mushi "flatfish hirame or karei" by getting a hint from their shape and their ability to vary their coloring and their migrate-eyes. These beautiful fancyworks are mede of traditional Japanese cloth with colorful patterns called "Chirimen". Magnet is attached to flatfish on the under side to put this on a fridge etc, and I attached one eye on eyeless side to explain their migrate-eye in its larval stage. Please use this for a good topic for conversation by all means.
私はフラットフィッシュの形や体色変化、移動する目などからヒントを得て、新しい手芸品を作りました。これらはちりめんとよばれる様々な柄をもった日本の伝統的織物でできています。作品の裏には冷蔵庫などにくっつくよう磁石をつけました。また、裏側には移動する目を説明するために目を一つつけておきました。ぜひ、話のタネにご利用ください。

In its larval stage, flatfishes have an eye on each side of the head, but during development one eye moves to other side. I attached one eye on eyeless side to explain this fact.

Flatfish "hireme" and "karei"
Flatfishes inhabit the waters of Japaneses coast throughout the temperate and toropical seas. The body of an adult is broad and flat, and is distinctive because of its lack of symetry. The fish has the habit of lying on one side on the bottom. Generally most Japanese people call this compressed fishes "hirame" or "karei" They are familiar at a fish store or a supermarket in Japan. A roast or tempura is most populer cooking, but they are also highly esteemed food fishes. Of course, They are listed on Jpanese sushi menu.
フラットフィッシュは日本の沿岸の温帯、熱帯地方に分布し、体は幅広で平べったく、左右非対称の体が特徴です。海底に体の片側を横たえて棲息しています。一般的にこの押しつぶされたような魚は日本ではヒラメ、カレイと呼ばれています。ヒラメとカレイは魚屋さんやスーパーマーケットでよく見かける食材です。焼魚やテンプラが最も庶民的な料理方法でしょう。でも、食材として、高く評価されています。お寿司やさんのネタにもあります。

How to distinguish between hirame and karei.
Hirame and karei look very much alike, but they are diffrent species each other. It is said that left is hirame, and right is karei amang Japanese fishermans.
Hirame has the eye on the left side. "left-eyed flatfish"
karei has the eye on the right side. "right-eyed flatfish"
ヒラメとカレイは非常によく似ています。しかし、全く違った種です。日本の漁師の間では、左ヒラメに右カレイと言われています。目が上にある方を上にしてヒラメは体の左側に目があります。カレイは体の右側に目があります。

The underside, or blind side, is usually whitish, while the upper, or eyed side, is pigmented.　Flatfishes generally have a highly developed ability to vary their coloring in order to match their backgrounds.

migrate-eye
Adult flatfishes differ from all other fishes. The adult is compressed laterally and lies on the bottom on its blind, or eyeless, side. Larval flatfishes swim normally and have an eye on each side of the head, but during development the skull twists and one eye "migrates" across the top of the head to lie close beside the other.
成長したフラットフィッシュは他の魚と大いに異なります。体の横から圧縮され、海底に横たわったかっこうになります。生まれたばかりのフラットフィッシュは普通の魚と同じように泳ぎ、目も頭の両側にあります。しかし、成長するにしたがい、頭はねじれ、片側の一つの目は頭の上を横切って別な方の側に移動します。

今回、私は日本の伝統的織物ちりめんを使って壁掛けを作りました。このボードの中には何が潜んでいるかわかりますか？フラットフィッシュの体色変化などからヒントを得て、壁掛けを作りました。作品の裏には磁石をつけ、ボードの中には磁石がくっつくように鉄板が入っており、きれいなちりめんの布を貼っております。
